Don’t Forget Your Camera On Your Next Fishing Trip

By Trevor Kugler Here’s a little scenario for you: You’re out fishing with your buddy when he hooks into a trophy. It’s a BIG fish and after a long fight, the two of you finally land the monster. You’re both incredibly excited and very happy to have witnessed such an epic moment. Then you realize that you forget your camera, and of course, your friend doesn’t have one either. There are going to be no pictures of the monster on this day. This scenario sucks, I’ve been through it. You’re left with nothing but a great fish story. This is of course assuming that you fish like me, and release fish after you catch them. If you are a catch and release angler, a camera is a pretty important thing. Technology has made it that much easier for all of us to have a quality camera with us at all times. And no I’m not talking about you camera phone. Those cameras aren’t worth the price of admission. I am talking about digital cameras though. Digital cameras have become very affordable and the quality picture they produce is quite amazing. Digital cameras have become small enough that they can fit in most pockets on a fishing vest as well. If you do decide to go with a digital camera, either buy a water resistant one or make sure you store it in a Ziploc bag. We don’t want your camera getting ruined if you have an accident. Another option, which I’ve used in the past, is to carry a disposable camera with you. I used to carry a waterproof disposable camera in my fishing vest that is before I got my digital camera. The disposable camera worked fine and is still a viable and less expensive option. The only issue that I ever had with my disposable waterproof camera is that it was quite bulky. It almost took up an entire pocket in my fishing vest by itself. The digital camera I have now is very small and I don’t even realize it’s there. The bottom line is that you remember your camera on your next fishing trip. Especially if you’re a catch and release angler, as I am. It makes no difference whether you have a digital or disposable camera, just don’t forget the camera. You never know when you might run into something on the water that you’d like to capture. I’ve seen sun rises and sunsets that bring a tear to my eye, and I’m glad IU had a camera with my to capture the essence of them. Be The Envy Of Your Neighbors-Get A Fantastic Looking Lawn

By Paul Guzman Generally speaking you should fertilize your lawn once in spring, summer and early fall. Do not fertilize your lawn during the cold season months. However be sure to use a “winterizer” during the winter months. This should be done at least once but twice is ideal. Ask you local nursery for this type of “winterizer”. Mowing your lawn: Here is one question I get all the time. When do I mow my lawn? Here is my standard answer. Mow it when it needs it. Duh. Always keep you mower blades sharp this helps the blades from recuperating much faster thus making it look much better and greener. Also lift your mower blades up one notch after each mowing. Too low and the grass will look dull and brownish the higher the blades the better. Below I will list the types of lawn grasses or sod for general landscaping design. But first the difference between grass and sod. Grass is sod and sod is grass. You can purchase bermuda, fescue, zoysia, and St. Augustine grass in sod form. You can also get them in seed form. Seed grass comes in well seeds. It is usually spread with a broadcast , handheld or dropdown spreader you can even do it by hand but may come out in clumps. It works best with a broadcast spreader. Sod is commercially grown and usually cut to the buyers specifications. You can purchase sod at a nursery or at a retail sod store. It comes in a mat size of about 16″ by 45″ for a total of 5sq ft. Bermudagrass - Has many uses and is what most folks use through out the desert southwest. It is very drought tolerant and will creep and grow during the summer season. However you can control spreading with some of the hybrids below. Here are some varieties and descriptions of bermuda sod. This type of grass/sod is drought tolerant, you can water about 1-2 times per week during the hot summer months. About 15 minutes on a sprinkler system. If you want it to look super I recommend once every other day during the hot summer months. It can tolerate traffic and is perfect for the backyard. You should fertilizer at least once per month. There are several varieties to choose from and below is a list. Bermuda -Tifton is for home lawns, commercial fields, coarse & blends with common Bermuda. Bermuda -Tifgreen is for home lawns, commercial, putting greens and the blades are fine, low growing grass. Bermuda -Tifway 419 used for lawns, commercial, fairways, medium blades. Bermuda -Santa Ana used for home lawns, commercial, fields, medium type blades. Bermuda -Texturf 10 Mostly used for home lawns, and have coarse blades. Bermuda -Overseeded with perennial rye used for lawns, commercial , medium to fine blades. Overseeded means the perennial rye will look green thru the winter months but will go dormant during the summer season when the Bermuda looks best. You can calculate how much sod or topsoil you need at: Sod Calculate Fescue - There are several varieties of fescue. This type of grass/sod is not drought tolerant but looks great almost year round wit additional watering. It will usually cost more in sod or seed form. Fescue Advantage known as Festuca arundinaceum, is a cool season, perennial grass which means it will stay green all year round. Tall Fescue is actually Kentucky 31 variety and is a cool season grass but will do well during the hot summer months with ample watering. Creeping or red Fescue, can be grown in single stands and prefers more shadier and cooler areas than most other cool season fescue grasses. Hard Fescue likes shade and is drought & disease resistant and it likes higher elevation type environment. Usually not available at retail nurseries. . The Bonsai Braided Money Plant Tree

By Lee Dobbins Bonsai trees can be a great hobby and a wonderful way to add interest to your garden or inside your home. They take a minimal of care and the ability to train and prune them can be a great creative outlet. Not all bonsai trees are the same and there are many different types of trees that can be interesting to grow. A favorite for bonsai enthusiasts is the braided money plant tree as it is easy to grow and makes a great indoor plant. The braided bonsai money plant tree, also known as Pachira aquatica, is a miniature tree characterized by multiple intertwining trunks. Each tree is actually four to five separate trees with their trunks braided together. Its size varies anywhere from 10-18 inches tall. (Full-grown money plant trees can reach 7 feet tall.) The tree is topped with large, bright green leaves that form a tuft at the tip of each stem. The braided bonsai money plant tree is usually given as a gift, as it is reputed to bring good luck. Generally, the more leaves the money tree has, the better! While it is common to find money trees with five to six leaves on each stem, it is quite rare to find one with seven leaves. Like a four-leaf clover, a money plant tree with a seven-leaf stem is considered to bring incredibly good fortune. The braided bonsai money plant tree is also a mainstay in feng shui. Feng shui practitioners believe that the braided bonsai creates positive energy for any room that it placed in. According to this belief, you should place your money tree in the financial part of your home or office. Each new leaf of the tree will then bring added financial blessing and success. The Pachira aquatica is an easy bonsai to grow; it is ideal for indoor cultivation. Unlike other bonsai, it is quite hardy. It can thrive for many years with minimal care. It is tolerant of both low light conditions and dryness. All you will need is a little bit of soil to hold the roots. Other than that, brief exposure to sunlight and weekly watering will be enough to make the plant thrive. The amount of water you give your plant is critical and one common mistake that many beginning plant owners make is over watering. This can actually kill your plant! You want to be sure to water so that the soil is moist but you dont want to put so much in so that there is standing water in the planter. If you are a bonsai beginner, the braided bonsai can be ideal for you! (And the added luck couldnt hurt.) Even if the braided bonsai money plant tree you acquire seems to have damaged leaves, dont worry. Those leaves will drop off and beautiful leaves will sprout up in their place. Enjoy both your tree and your newfound luck! Lee Dobbins writes for http://bonsai.garden-corner.com/ where you can learn more about bonsai plants as well as find out about more types of bonsai trees. Jelly Beans

By Michael Russell It is impossible to trace the exact origins of the Jelly Bean. Only part of its history remains and the rest are lost in time. However, most experts believe that the Turkish Delight, which is a known Mid-Eastern sweet, is the forerunner of the modern day Jelly Bean and has been around since the Biblical times. The process known as panning was created in 17th century France and was used to make Jordan Almonds. Panning was done primarily by hand is now automated, but the process has remained essentially unchanged during the last three centuries. In Panning, the process would begin by rocking almonds in a bowl that was filled with syrup and sugar until the almonds were coated with a hard candy shell. The panning process gave birth to shell coating and today, large rotating pans are used to do the heavy work. It is the Master Confectioners that work on the art of adding and mixing the ingredients to create the perfect shell. In some way, these processes reached the factories in America. The Jelly Beans began production there and soon earned a spot among the many glass ‘penny candy’ jars that were on display in the candy stores. In general stores, the Jelly Beans were sold by weight and given to the buyers placed in paper bags. The Jelly Beans had an egg-like shape and in the 1930s, they became part of the Easter tradition. They were associated with the Easter Bunny was thought to deliver eggs on Easter as a sign of new life and the start of spring. Manufacturing a Jelly Bean begins with the making of its center. To do this, ingredients like sugar and corn syrup among others are placed in large boilers which are heated to cook the mixture. The heated mixture is then passed through pipes and travels to the starch casting area. At this point, there are many trays containing impressions of the size and shape of the center of the jellybean that are layered with cornstarch by machines. The mix is then squirted out onto the trays and dried overnight. The next day, the cornstarch layer is removed and the beans are run through a moisture steam bath and are sprayed with sugar. The beans are then set aside for 24 to 48 hours. What sets the jellybean apart from other candies is its special shell coating. This is achieved by the panning process. The beans are poured into a rotating drum which is called the ‘engrossing pan’. While the center of the drum rotates, sugar is gradually added to build up the shell. Then, different colors and flavors are added to the mix to give the jellybean its signature taste and appearance. The shiny look is because of the addition of Confectioner’s Glaze which is a process that can take 2 to 4 days. After the beans are ‘polished’, they are packed and prepared for shipping to candy stores around the world. There have been two types of jellybeans since 1976. These are the traditional and the gourmet jellybeans. Even though both types take 6 to 10 days to make, the difference is in their recipes that gives each their unique qualities. The traditional jelly bean normally holds its flavor only in the shells. The gourmet varieties however have flavored shells and centers. They also are softer and smaller than the traditional jellybeans. Weight Loss - The Mental Process

By Patricia Zelkovsky When you go on a diet and decide you want to lose some weight, most people think Ill stop eating so much, maybe do a bit of exercise and be my ideal weight in just a few days. Sadly, these people end up disappointed and usually heavier than when they started. Dieting is not just a physical process but a mental one too. If you do not have the mental processes right then your diet will be a struggle and possibly fail. By having the right mental approach and being in control of your brain you can turbo charge your way to your ideal weight. So how do you get in control of your brain then? Before I reveal that, you need to know that you are made up of two parts. You have your conscious mind, which is your ego the part that chatters on all day. Then you have your sub-conscious, which is the part that grows your hair, your nails, pumps blood around your body and so on. This is a very powerful thing to know, because most people fail in their diets because they do not have the sub-conscious mind working with them, and so it sabotages their efforts. Consciously you want to lose weight, but sub-consciously you enjoy the extra weight for various reasons, e.g. security, lack of attention from the opposite sex, etc. The first step in making any change is awareness. This means you become aware of the way your brain works and how you think about yourself and weight loss. For example, lots of people will say, Im struggling to lose weight or I hate dieting or something along those lines. The words you use program your sub-conscious mind. When you say things like this you are giving a strong message to your subconscious mind which takes it all on board. The same if you say, Why cant I lose weight? or Why am I always eating so much? or anything like this your sub-conscious mind will give you the answers and tell you why! And how will that make you feel not so good I imagine! Being in control of your mind means being in control of what it says to you it doesnt operate on its own doing what it wants, it operates in a pattern that it has learnt over the years from you. And the nice thing is, this habit you can change it! So the first step is to become aware of what you say to yourself when you talk about your dieting and weight. What do you say? Think about this now Is it positive and encouraging? Or is it not? Over the next week, listen to how you talk to yourself about your weight, your appearance and your diet. Now you are more aware of what you are saying to yourself about dieting and losing weight, you can start to reprogram yourself and get rid of those patterns. When you hear yourself say something that is discouraging or negative about yourself stop yourself immediately and change it into something positive and encouraging something that makes you feel good. When you start doing this you will soon notice that your diet becomes so much easier and the weight disappears! Drinking Your Pain Away

By Brianna Stanley Twenty years of research has shown Dr. Batmanghelidj what nature has always known: that water is critical to life. So critical, in fact, that the lack of water–or dehydration–actually produces most of our chronic pains and ailments. He reveals the exciting news . . . it is possible to treat and prevent pain for free! Finally . . . a natural element that can counteract those agonzing degenerative diseases! If you are concerned about the negative effects that prescription and over-the-counter drugs have on your body, please read this report in its entirety and consider obtaining more information on the subject. It can change the way you look and feel. Seventy-five percent of Americans are dehydrated. Instead of consuming life-giving water, we reach for a cold soda or high-sugar juice (and this is after our morning coffee, which also depletes our bodies of necessary fluids). Unfortunately this has taken a serious toll on our health-care structure, for our natural drought management system dictates that when we do have a water shortage certain parts of our bodies are forced to go without water. This is why a blood test is a poor diagnosis for whether or not someone is dehydrated: for obvious reasons, the blood is the last remaining area from which water is taken. Dehydration is evident. It can be seen in frequent headaches, muscle pains, cramping, heartburn, dizziness which increases upon standing, dry skin, inability to produce tears, poor short-term memory, poor digestion, constipation, nosebleeds, and, lastly, dry mouth. A surprising fact is that thirst is actually a very poor indicator of your need to drink water. The less water you drink, the less often you will feel thirsty; dehydration “shuts off” our thirst perception, so to speak. Dr. B happened upon some information that is so little known that it isn’t even publicized in medical textbooks: the role of histamine. Histamine is basically a chemical messenger messenger that is in charge of drought management in the body. Not surprisingly, it is more active when we are dehydrated and makes itself be known through aches and pains that we cover up with medicines. Also not surprising is the fact that most if not all of the medications that we take are antihistamines. What are we doing? Dehydrating ourselves more and more . . . As far as hydrating and back pain go, water is a major component of cartilage. It follows then that if we dehydrate ourselves, the cells in our cartilage will shrivel up and eventually be worn away. Not only that, but without adequate fluids, the body can’t move toxins through the body which causes them to accumulate in the joints–a condition known as osteoarthritis. Even if you don’t have arthritis, chances are good that your back pain is from dehydration, for another common symptom is muscle spasms. A brief explanation of why cartilage breaks down: water is the lubrication for the cells in the cartilage. When you don’t provide enough fluid, the cells are no longer able to glide over each other and the friction becomes very abrasive (like rubbing a piece of granite against some chalk). It is easy to see why water is so important to our joints. While it is true that most back pain is related to strain, injury, or overuse, pain can still be the result of a lack of fluids. The cells need copious amounts of water to flush out the acid particles created by the increased work or stress that caused the strain. When dehydrated, the acid builds up and sends out pain signals–cries for water . . . not motrin. “Incurable” diseases have fallen prostrate before the power of water. The Mayo Clinic told an elderly gentleman who had suffered for over thirty years from arthritis in his spinal column that there was no hope for him. He lived in such excrutiating pain that it was impossible for him to stand; as a matter of fact, he resembled a comma (in his words). One year after consistently hydrating himself he was pain free–and not only that, but he had lower blood pressure too! Here are some interesting facts about hydration: –even mild dehydration slows down metabolism by as much as 3% –lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue –drinking just 5 glasses a day reduces your risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by 79%, and bladder cancer by 50% –a glass of water before bed stops midnight hunger pains (but you might have to get up to use the restroom!) –cold water is absorbed faster than warm water –drinking 6-8 glasses/day improves memory and concentration –in 37% of Americans the thirst mechanism is so weak that it’s usually mistaken for hunger Your joints are not the only area of your body that are negatively affected by lack of water. There is one very important area, that should strike you even if nothing else does–your brain. This all-important organ is made up of 85% water! And unfortunately for us, when we deprive ourselves of water it is one of the first places that the body automatically squeezes fluid from. When water, the “messenger” of the brain, is reduced, we suffer from headaches, poor short-term memory, dizziness, poor balance, and general “fogginess.” Indeed, migraines can often be treated successfully with improved hydration. How much water do you need? A good rule of thumb is to divide your body weight by two: for example, a 160 pound person should drink at least 80 ounces of water a day. Obviously more should be consumed if you exercise or live in a hot climate. And while water is the basis for many other drinks including coffee, soda, juice, and alcohol, there really is no subsitute for it by itself. All of those drinks contain substances that are detrimental to your overall health and wellbeing. Dr. Howard Flaks of Beverly Hills has this to say about the subject: “As a result of not drinking enough water, many people encounter such problems as excess body fat, poor muscle tone and size, decreased digestive efficiency and organ function, increased toxicity in the body, joint and muscle soreness (particularly after exercise) and water retention.” So go ahead. Drink to your health! Brianna Stanley has turned her passion for health and wellness into her business. The New Anti Cellulite Treatments

By Craig Weaver Over the years there have been a good many anti cellulite treatments come and go. This is a matter that a lot of people have noticed and it has made them wonder if any of them will ever work as they say they do. Well the time is now for such questions because there is a lot of people who are finding relief with the many new treatments and they are singing the praises in the streets thanks to the new developments. Most of the products that have been introduced are the new cellulite creams. With this new method of treatment there is little chance for a side effect because of the fact that most people are not even worried about the inside of their bodies but mostly about the outward appearance. This is where cellulite is at its worse. The dimples that appear from the formation of cellulite are the main reason why people are so worried about getting rid of it all together. So you see that it is most likely a purely physical reaction that we are all having to this problem that actually requires the solution of taking care of the outward appearance before anything else. So you need to understand that the cellulite creams that are being sold as anti cellulite treatments are designed to treat the appearance of the cellulite on the skin and not the problem that comes from the cellulite itself. The new anti cellulite treatments that have come out will certainly help in the means of appearance and such but they can only go so far. They do not actually help in stopping the cellulite from forming, that is something that only we can do. This is where a lot of the cellulite creams rated have fallen short. The people that are using them have been under the impression that it will cure the cellulite when it is designed for another purpose altogether. Anti cellulite treatments are becoming more and more popular every day. This is due to the many people who are desiring the youthful look of their past and notice that cellulite has taken over some of their body. With this in mind you should know that you can help the body fight off the formation of cellulite with a healthy diet and some daily exercise. This is all part of the fight against cellulite and the effects that it has on the body. Kayak Fishing in Estes Park, Colorado

By James Putnam Thinking of moving up from shore fishing? The advantages of being on the water are many. I love the closeness to nature, and how peaceful and tranquil it is. Wild creatures are less intimidated by people when they are floating in the water. I have seen mule deer, coyotes, fox, and all kinds of waterfowl. My favorite times have been drifting through small herds of wading elk in my local body of water, Lake Estes, Colorado. I have taken photos of elk from five feet away. They took no more interest in my kayak and me than they would a duck or a loon. There is also the mobility aspect of kayak fishing. A lot of times if the fish arent biting where you are, they are elsewhere. Its easy to fish a bay here, a point there, a cove on the other side of the lake, the inlet etc… Estes Park is a small town, and often Ill run across some of my fishing buddies in one of the lake’s honey holes. My kayak has two rod holders so I can troll while I travel from spot to spot. The rod holders arent necessary, as you can place your rod in the bow of the boat and troll backwards. Some lakes/ponds dont allow boats, but do allow personal water craft. At these places you can fish structures that you cant reach from shore. As my kayak weighs less than forty pounds…my tackle box weighs more…its easy to hike in. Although float tubes are also a convenient way to fish, I prefer the kayak. Personally, I find them to be more fun on the water, but there are other advantages. To me the most important is convenience. By the time I get to a lake/pond Im “jonesing” so bad to fish, I have to fight the urge to cast out the car window. There is no inflating, no waders to put on, and no awkward flippers to strap on. I simply unlock and unstrap my “yak” from the roof, throw it in the water and go. Another very important advantage is speed. In Colorado the weather can change in an instant. In a tube I dont feel safe if the weather looks as if it could turn for the worse, so I stay near shore. In the kayak, no matter how far out I am, I can return to shore in minutes. I also like the fact that I can carry gear. Its easy to tote two or three rods, a tackle box, and even a cooler. This is helpful during camping trips and family outings. I have used the kayak at bigger reservoirs, like Aurora, to carry gear from one side to the other to meet people shore fishing. Sometimes Ill get lucky and catch one before my buddies get around the lake. It easily crosses shallow areas in lakes. If you have fished in a tube you know the places Im talking about. The water is less than a foot deep, but the ground beneath is like quick sand. In a kayak you can drift across areas that are inches deep with ease. You dont need a lot of money to get into kayak fishing. Obviously you need a kayak. I have a Heritage Feather Light 9, which was designed for fishing. Before that I fished from an inflatable Sevylor I bought off a Kool-aide vendor after he used it for a display, so any kayak will do. Oars can also be costly. I use a mid-range one now, however, the $20.00 one I had before was sufficient. I used to use a cheap foam and strap roof rack, which could be loaded and unloaded fairly effortlessly. However, I feel safer and more secure with the Thule rack I have now. It is sturdier, quicker, and wicked easier to use. I highly recommend trying kayak fishing. It is both relaxing and exciting. It can bring you to areas of your local lakes that you have not fished before. It is a relatively inexpensive way to try trolling, which I have found very effective. It is a whole new fishing experience. A lot of lakes/reservoirs marinas rent out kayaks for a reasonable rate. So get out there and give it a try, you just may find yourself hooked. http://www.fishinsecrets.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=James_Putnam http://EzineArticles.com/?Kayak-Fishing-in-Estes-Park,-Colorado&id=238058 inexpensive zolpidem medicine ambien altace ambien zolpidem generic buy

Prepare Paella Like A Pro

By Lee Dobbins Preparing paella is an interesting endeavour for any cook. This dish does not really have a set list of ingredients but is mostly a combination of different meats and vegetables. In fact, the The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, refers to paella as a saffron-flavored dish made with varying combinations of rice, vegetables, meat, chicken and seafood. The meal is prepared in a pot - all the ingredients meld together in the pot while cooking to create the dishes great taste. This pot cooking is so closely associated with this dish that its name, paella means frying pan or pot in Old French and Catalan languages. Paella is a great dish to make if you want to clean out the fridge and use up leftover meats and vegetables. Any combination will eventually be great the secret is in the chemistry. Paella is a dish that is generally made to feed several people. Moreover, paella is quite flavorful the next day as the tastes have had time to mix together and become stronger. The secret to a good paella is being creative, therefore there are many recipes one can follow. But since a recipe is not necessary, nor desirable, the basic steps to creating this dish are outlined below. Its up to you to provide the creativity in ingredients to make the dish your own! Making The Rice You can use whatever kind of rice you like. A wild rice can add interesting flavor and texture to the dish, but if you prefer brown or white feel free to go with. Frying the rice as outlined below will give it a nutty flavor. Wash the rice and set aside Chop tomato, onion ad garlic Heat olive oil in a skillet, and once the oil is hot (but not smoking) toss in the rice Add the onion, garlic and tomato after a minute or two Stir until the onion, tomato and garlic are soft. Dont let the rice mixture overcook - 3 to 5 minutes is plenty of time. At the end of the cooking, you can spice it with whatever spices you like. Some common spices for paella are saffron, salt and pepper but you could add cayenne, cinnamon or any other herbs that you and your guests prefer. Remove the mixture from the burner and toss in some frozen peas. Not too many as you dont want to overpower the rice but just enough to add a little accent. Preparing The Meat In a frying pan at high heat, brown some pieces of chicken. Upper thighs, drumsticks, breasts…it’s all good. Do not cook the meat completely but brown the outside. Once browned, set the meat aside. Lamb can also add great flavor to your paella. Combining The Two The combining of the rice and meat mixtures is what makes the paella such an interesting and flavorful dish. Cover the bottom of the paella pan with the uncooked rice mixture. Add the browned chicken pieces on top. Add uncooked Merguez (spicy lamb sausages) and small fish filets rolled up and fastened with a toothpick or string. Use any type of fish but make sure that its flesh will hold well together. Pour some chicken broth on top (if the broth is warm the cooking time will reduce). Note that you can also add wine for more flavor. Cover the paella dish and cook for about 45 minutes at 350F or until the rice is cooked. At this point you can add raw shrimp or muscles and cook uncovered for another five minutes. And there you have it, an interesting dish with something in it that is sure to please everyone! Escort or Abduction? The Other Side of the Story

By Isabelle Zehnder When the Coalition Against Institutionalized Child Abuse (CAICA) was founded its main focus was to inform parents and the public about abuse in residential programs for children and teens. Though this is still our focus today, we realize we must do more than that - we must work to help parents in finding safe options. Therefore, we are working with people who we find to be credible and whose main focus is the best interest of the children and their families. By far the most important thing to me is the safety and well-being of children. The troubled child/teen industry is, for the most part, unregulated and just about anything goes. A very scary proposition when you are talking about the lives of children. It is our hope the industry will become regulated and that oversight will follow, but until then the best we can do is try to inform parents of the dangers so they do not fall into the same trap others have fallen into, and to offer safe alternatives - a rather difficult task for those who choose to try to make a difference in the lives of families. We are aware that by the time a parent has reached the point that they are seeking help outside of their local communities they are usually at their wits end. Typically things at home are spiraling out of control and they feel they could lose the most precious thing to them - their child. They are desperate and there are people, unfortunately, who prey on their desperation. Donna Hedricks, the pioneer of advocates for children abused in residential treatment facilities, passed away several years ago. Donnas dream and vision was to provide safe alternatives for children and hope for their families. She believed in being realistic, not radical. She understood that in todays fast-paced world and with a rising number of broken families many children turn to drugs, violence, sex, self-mutilation, gangs, alcohol, suicide, to name a few. She knew that though it would be ideal for parents to be able to help their children at home and in their local communities it was not always possible and outside intervention was sometimes needed. She understood the need for safe, effective programs for truly troubled teens. She was aware some transport companies resorted to handcuffs, pepper spray, and shock devices on the children, and understood the need for safe transports. A group of advocates for these children and their parents have worked very hard in an attempt to keep Donnas dream alive. Donna did not support those who are radical in their thinking that all programs are bad, that all programs should be shut down, and that parents should somehow feel guilty for their teen spiraling out of control. Rather, she saw the need to work with the parents in finding safe alternatives for their children and in reuniting families. She believed in programs that build the child up, not programs that break the child down. Such programs do exist, there is hope for families, and there is hope for children who are desperately crying out for help. CAICA realizes that no matter how much we would like children to be home with their families, many will be sent to programs for one reason or another. Like it or not, it is a reality. So, CAICA has decided to work with a team of people who are all dedicated to helping children and their families, and to finding the safest alternatives for these children. One piece of this very complex puzzle is the child/teen transport industry. While most people have no idea it even exists, children are being taken from their beds in the middle of the night by complete strangers, hired by their parents, and then transported thousands of miles to facilities their parents have often never visited with strangers they have often never met. Again, a very scary proposition when you are talking about children. I know this to be true because it happened to me. A teen who we agreed to care for because of troubles at his home was abducted from our home in the middle of the night, taken abruptly from my arms to an abusive facility thousands of miles from home. We lost all contact with this child for three years until he was able to contact us and inform us what happened to him. We also learned his sister was abducted in broad daylight at a parking lot. She was handcuffed and thrown into the back of a car like a criminal. This was an honor student with a love for the arts who had never been in trouble with the law. Again, I speak from person experience as I have known these children for many years. This is how I became involved in fighting for the safety of children in abusive programs. The child/teen escort business is virtually unregulated, much like the troubled child/teen industry. There is cause for concern and parents need to do their homework when deciding who will transport their child if it is necessary. Though I believe parents should transport their children whenever they can, I know this is not always possible. Over time I have heard from parents and children that their experience with their transport has been a very positive one. As difficult as it was for me to believe at first, I felt I owed it to these families to listen. I have done my homework and interviewed not only people working in the industry but children who were transported and their parents, and have come to realize there is another side to this story. Not all transport companies are alike, as not all programs are alike. Take Lorraine Colpitts, for example. She drove school buses for years and now runs her own transport company out of Maine Safe and Sound Youth Transportation, Inc. Lorraine will transport children only to programs she knows to be helpful, not hurtful. In an interview, Lorraine said, If it is not a place that is safe and therapeutic enough for my own child, then I would not leave any child there. She has actually taken students to programs, felt the situation was not in the best interest of the child, turned around, contacted the parents, and brought the child home. In one case, the parents and their son worked together to find a safer placement and the parents were able to transport him there without the use of a transport service. This is always preferred, though not always practical or feasible. Lorraine does her homework, she visits the programs. She knows the industry. If she hears anything negative about a program she will not take a child there. Lorraine does not resort to handcuffs, pepper spray, or any other form of restraints. Lorraine believes that because she is the first person the child will encounter during this difficult time, she wants to make the experience as painless as possible for everyone involved. She does not enter a childs room, wake them up, and leave them feeling they are being abducted by complete strangers. She works with families, having the parents talk with the children and coming to terms with what is about to happen. Many children are willing to go, they want to get help. Some are not. It takes a special person to be able to work with children at a time like this. Being a mom, she is able to use her wits and common sense rather than force and intimidation. She explains to the child that she did not create the situation, but she is the person who will be taking them from point A to point B. I asked Lorraine what she feels warrants the need for a child to go to a program. She responded, When a child is into self-harm, such as cutting, and parents cannot find the resources they need within their own communities, it is beneficial for the child to go to a place where they specialize in helping these kids. This is not something they typically get over, rather they go deeper into it. Drugs are another reason, kids heavily involved in pornography and inappropriate sexual behaviors. Also kids who are severely depressed and suicidal. Lorraines belief is, If a child is going to have to be transported to a facility, I would rather it be with me. Rather than using handcuffs and pepper spray, she uses kindness and care. These go a long way for children. She finds out what kids like before she picks them up, and is sure to have their favorite McDonalds burger, M&Ms, garlic bagel - waiting in the car. Marcia, who works with Lorraine, says, We do an incredible job on our transports and as hard as it is sometimes we always get the kids there safely, usually they are laughing and forgetting their troubles at least for a short time. I remember one trip with a very difficult young lady. We were rapping songs about silly things most of the way from Maine to Tennessee. She went on to say, Lorraine goes the extra mile to be sure she has the childs favorite food and a warm blanket. She matches the transport workers to the child as much as possible. Im older, so my job is usually to sit in the back talking quietly and making sure all of the childs needs are met. Ron and Amy Davis wrote to Lorraine, Our son is doing good and came home in July. He is anti-drug and looking at getting into college. He has hope he never had before. We want to thank you for your professionalism and let you know we appreciated what you did for us. You provide a valuable service for families that need help. Lorraine said, There are many things that I can do, but this is what I choose to do. And I will do this and be present on as many transports as I physically can be present for. We have transported over 400 kids in the past four years successfully. I am proud of our team, we have a great mix of people working together in the best interest of these children and their families. I asked her how she decides who will be present for the transport, and she said, We do our best to match the child with someone they will relate to. We learn about the child and determine what the childs reactions might be, what kind of intervention they might need. What kind of movies do they like so they can watch them on the portable DVD players. We have 24 people on our team so we have been very successful at finding the right match. Terrys daughter was transported by Lorraine to Ironwood in Maine, a facility known to build the children up, not tear them down. In a telephone interview, Terry said, My daughter was headed down a dark path and Lorraine was key in saving my daughters life. She truly is amazing and continues to be my friend. I asked Lorraine what the greatest rewards were of this position and she said, You couldnt give me a job I would be better suited for than this. Being a mom, having kids give me a hug and thank me for getting them there safely. Ninety percent of the time they hug and thank me, telling me they havent talked to an adult as much as they talked to me in years. Its very rewarding. When kids have asked her, How can you do this type of job? She responds, Because Id rather be giving you your favorite hamburger or candy bar than have someone throw you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Im a mom and I care. She looks back, their eyes meet, and a smile comes over the childs face. They connect and make the journey safely together.
